The fact that everyone knew Goku was the best, and wen seeing that even the best chance they had were giving up,what else was there to think but all was completely lost. Before the likes of Gohan, Goku giving up was probably the best dramatic scene to happen in the sense that everyone knows no matter how thick the mud got, Goku never gave up but here he was obviously outclassed and it was too much even for the mighty Super Saiyan. That's epic on its own scale
